Ernest J. Gaines

Ernest J. Gaines è un autore di narrativa letteraria americano altamente celebrato, noto soprattutto per i suoi coinvolgenti lavori di fiction. Nato il 15 gennaio 1933 in Louisiana, Gaines è cresciuto in una famiglia di mezzadri e ha iniziato a raccogliere cotone nei campi all'età di nove anni. Ha frequentato la scuola solo per cinque o sei mesi all'anno e all'età di quindici anni si è trasferito in California per unirsi alla madre e al patrigno, poiché non c'era una high school per gli afroamericani nel suo parrocchia della Louisiana. È in California che Gaines ha iniziato a scrivere.

La carriera di scrittore di Gaines è decollata dopo aver frequentato l'Università statale di San Francisco, aver prestato servizio nell'esercito e aver vinto una borsa di studio per la Stanford University. I suoi lavori sono stati insegnati nelle aule universitarie e tradotti in molte lingue, tra cui francese, spagnolo, tedesco, russo e cinese. Quattro dei suoi lavori sono stati trasformati in film per la televisione e il suo romanzo del 1993, "A Lesson Before Dying", ha vinto il National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction. Gaines è stato riconosciuto per i suoi contributi alla letteratura con numerosi premi, tra cui essere un borsista della Fondazione MacArthur, essere stato introdotto nell'American Academy of Arts and Letters, aver ricevuto la National Humanities Medal e la National Medal of Arts, e aver essere stato introdotto nell'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres francese come Chevalier.
