Fritz Leiber è stato un autore americano influente, noto per i suoi contributi ai generi della fantasy, dell'orrore e della science fiction. È nato il 24 dicembre 1910 a Chicago, Illinois, e ha studiato filosofia all'Università di Chicago, laureandosi nel 1932. Successivamente, ha anche studiato teologia e ha lavorato come predicatore laico per un certo periodo. L'interesse di Leiber per la letteratura è stato influenzato dalla compagnia teatrale dei suoi genitori, FritzLieber & Co, della quale ha fatto parte nel 1934.
Leiber è considerato uno dei padri del sottogenere di fantasy Sword and Sorcery, insieme a Robert E. Howard e Michael Moorcock.
