John Harvey è un autore britannico affermato, noto principalmente per i suoi romanzi di genere crime. È il creatore della serie Charlie Resnick, influenzata dalla musica jazz e ambientata nella città di Nottingham. Oltre alla serie Resnick, Harvey ha scritto più di 90 libri sotto diversi pseudonimi, tra cui Jon Barton, William S. Brady, L.J. Coburn, J.B. Dancer, John B. Harvey, William M. James, Terry Lennox, John J. McLaglen, James Mann, Thom Ryder, J.D. Sandon e Jon Hart.
Nato a Tufnell Park, North London nel dicembre 1938, il padre di Harvey lo portava spesso da bambino in una libreria di Kentish Town per comprare copie di Biggles. All'età di cinque anni, ha sviluppato una passione per i libri di conigli di Alison Uttley. Si è trasferito nella tranquilla città di Nottingham nei anni '60. Harvey ha un forte legame con Nottingham, avendo ambientato la sua famosa serie Charlie Resnick nella città. I suoi contributi alla scena letteraria della città sono stati riconosciuti nel 2009 quando ha ricevuto una laurea honoris causa (Dottore in Lettere) dall'Università di Nottingham. Prima di dedicarsi alla scrittura a tempo pieno, Harvey ha insegnato inglese per più di 12 anni in diversi college in tutto il paese. Ha gestito la Slow Dancer Press dal 1977 al 1999, pubblicando poesia.
La carriera di scrittore di Harvey è iniziata in pratica per caso quando ha iniziato a produrre western e romanzi per motociclisti e giovani. Ha anche scritto per televisione e radio, adattando serie classiche e popolari. Il suo primo romanzo Resnick, Lonely Hearts, è stato pubblicato nel 1989 ed è stato incluso nella lista dei 100 migliori romanzi crime del secolo del Times. Ha concluso la serie nel 1998 con Last Rites, sebbene Resnick sia apparso successivamente in modo periferico nella nuova serie di Frank Elder di Harvey. Il protagonista Elder è un detective in pensione che ora vive in Cornovaglia. Il primo romanzo di questa serie, Flesh and Blood, ha vinto a Harvey il Silver Dagger dei Criminal Writers' Association nel 2004. Nel 2007, gli è stato assegnato il Diamond Dagger per il contributo alla vita al genere. Harvey è anche un grande tifoso del Notts County.
