Nelson Richard DeMille è un noto scrittore americano, nato a Jamaica, Queens, New York il 23 agosto 1943. È figlio di Huron DeMille, un costruttore, e sua moglie Antonia Panzera. La famiglia di DeMille si trasferì a Long Island quando lui era un bambino, dove frequentò la Elmont Memorial High School e sviluppò una passione per il football e l'atletica leggera.
Dopo essersi diplomato, DeMille trascorse tre anni all'Università di Hofstra prima di arruolarsi nell'esercito. Frequentò la Scuola Ufficiali Candidati ed è stato nominato Tenente nell'Esercito degli Stati Uniti, servendo dal 1966 al 1969. DeMille vide l'azione in Vietnam come leader di plotone di fanteria con la Prima Divisione di Cavalleria e fu decorato con la Medaglia dell'Aria, la Bronze Star e la Croce di Gallanteria Vietnamita. Dopo il congedo, tornò all'Università di Hofstra e conseguì la laurea in Scienze Politiche e Storia. Ha tre figli e attualmente risiede a Long Island.
DeMille è meglio conosciuto per i suoi thriller e fiction di crimine, con opere notevoli, tra cui "La figlia del generale", "La Gold Coast" e la serie John Corey. Anche se scrive principalmente in questo genere, ha anche intrapreso la non-fiction utilizzando pseudonimi. Molti dei suoi lavori sono impostati a Long Island, dove è cresciuto. Il suo primo romanzo importante, "By the Rivers of Babylon", è stato pubblicato nel 1978 e sono ancora in stampa oggi, insieme a tutte le sue opere successive.
DeMille è membro di varie organizzazioni professionali, tra cui American Mensa, The Authors Guild e International Thriller Writers. Ha prestato servizio come ex presidente dei Mystery Writers of America ed è un giudice del Book-of-the-Month Club. Ha ricevuto tre dottorati onorari dall'Università di Hofstra, dall'Università di Long Island e dal College Dowling. Nel 2015, DeMille è stato scelto come ThrillerMaster dell'anno da International Thriller Writers. Ha anche contribuito racconti per antologie e recensioni di libri e articoli per riviste e giornali.
